Hi Rich,

I think you're right. Investing the money back into the farm is the best thing to do for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Probably just poor choice of words in that instance. I don't fault Wiessman actually. The book is generally positive. The post was just a reaction to the lumping a person who was generous to a religious charity together with the guy who blew his wad on a Hummer. Not the same thing. Thanks for the comment!

I've read that passage hundreds of times yet I still believe that Mark was simply drawing a comparison, not necessarily lauding the woman for doing the smartest thing.

In the case of the coffee farmer, expansion and reinvestment means more jobs, maybe higher paying jobs for current workers, and more money flowing into the community. I don't believe it's a case of trying to get rich - it's more about being able to sustain the coffee farm and thus, spread the wealth. It's simply a different, and dare I say, more effective way, of helping her neighbors. Maybe she could've tithed 10% and invested the rest in the farm.

That said, perhaps, "didn't get it," was a poor choice of words on Ms. Weisman's part.
