It was so good, I was surprised to find virtually no reference to it anywhere while searching the internet, and no text except locked in Google Books. That&#8217;s no good, so I am reposting it here so that others might enjoy it as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Straying Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My thought it is a wanton ranger,<br \/>\nIt skips away;<br \/>\nI fear &#8217;twill bring my soul in danger<br \/>\nOn Judgment Day.<\/p>\n<p>For when the holy psalms are singing<br \/>\nAway it flies,<br \/>\nGambolling, stumbling, lightly springing<br \/>\nBefore God&#8217;s eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mongst giddypated folk it rambles,<br \/>\nGirls light of mind;<br \/>\nThrough forests and through cities gambols<br \/>\nSwifter than wind.<\/p>\n<p>Now in rich raths and jewels glowing<br \/>\n&#8216;Mid goodly men;<br \/>\nNow to the ragged pauper going<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis fled again.<\/p>\n<p>Without a boat it skims the ocean,<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis swift to fly<br \/>\nHeavenward with unimpeded motion<br \/>\nFrom earth to sky.<\/p>\n<p>Through all the courses of all folly<br \/>\nIt runs, and then<br \/>\nLightly, untouched of melancholy<br \/>\nComes home again.<\/p>\n<p>Vain is the hope to hold or bind it,<br \/>\nThe unfettered thought<br \/>\nWanton, unresting, idle-minded,<br \/>\nSets chains at nought.<\/p>\n<p>The sword&#8217;s keen edge, the whip&#8217;s sharp chiding<br \/>\nIt scorns, grown bold;<br \/>\nLike an eel&#8217;s tail it wriggles, sliding<br \/>\nOut of my hold.<\/p>\n<p>No bolt, no bar, no lock, no fetter,<br \/>\nNo prison cell<br \/>\nCan stay its course; they serve no better<br \/>\nPits deep as Hell.<\/p>\n<p>O fair, chaste Christ! who in all places<br \/>\nSeest all men&#8217;s eyes<br \/>\nCheck by the Spirit&#8217;s sevenfold graces<br \/>\nThought&#8217;s wandering wise.<\/p>\n<p>Terrible Lord of earth and heaven!<br \/>\nRule Thou my heart!<br \/>\nMy faith, my love to Thee be given,<br \/>\nMy every part!<\/p>\n<p>So in thy companies to-morrow<br \/>\nI too may go;<br \/>\nLoyal and leal are they.
