Shame of me for letting the day pass without mention. I must say, my first exposure to Burns (besides the &#8220;My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose&#8221; routine) is the musical adaptation of Now Westlin Winds by Dick Gaughan. I just listened to this again yesterday and it&#8217;s excellent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Now Westlin Winds<\/strong><br \/>\n(Robert Burns)<\/p>\n<p>Now westlin winds, and slaught&#8217;ring guns<br \/>\nBring August&#8217;s pleasant weather;<br \/>\nThe moorcock springs, on whirring wings,<br \/>\nAmang the blooming heather;<br \/>\nNow waving grain, wide o&#8217;er the plain,<br \/>\nDelights the weary Farmer;<br \/>\nThe moon shines bright, as I rove at night,<br \/>\nTo muse upon my Charmer.<\/p>\n<p>The Pairtrick lo&#8217;es the fruitfu&#8217; fells;<br \/>\nThe Plover lo&#8217;es the mountains;<br \/>\nThe woodcock haunts the lanely dells;<br \/>\nThe soaring Hern the fountains:<br \/>\nThro&#8217; lofty groves, the Cushat roves,<br \/>\nThe path o&#8217;man to shun it;<br \/>\nThe hazel bush o&#8217;erhangs the Thrush,<br \/>\nThe spreading thorn the Linnet.<\/p>\n<p>Thus ev&#8217;ry kind their pleasure find,<br \/>\nThe savage and the tender;<br \/>\nSome social join, and leagues combine;<br \/>\nSome solitary wander:<br \/>\nAvaunt, away! the cruel sway,<br \/>\nTyrannic man&#8217;s dominion;<br \/>\nThe Sportsman&#8217;s joy, the murd&#8217;ring cry,<br \/>\nThe flutt&#8217;ring, gorg pinion!<\/p>\n<p>But Peggy dear, the ev&#8217;ning&#8217;s clear,<br \/>\nThick flies the skimming Swallow;<br \/>\nThe sky is blue, the fields in view,<br \/>\nAll fading-green and yellow:<br \/>\nCome let us stray our gladsome way,<br \/>\nAnd view the charms o&#8217; Nature:<br \/>\nThe rustling corn, the fruited thorn<br \/>\nAnd ilka happy creature.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll gently walk, and sweetly talk,<br \/>\nWhile the silent moon shines clearly;<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll clasp thy waist, and fondly prest,<br \/>\nSwear how I lo&#8217;e thee dearly:<br \/>\nNot vernal show&#8217;rs to budding flow&#8217;rs,<br \/>\nNot Autumn to the Farmer,<br \/>\nSo dear can be, as thou to me,<br \/>\nMy fair, my lovely Charmer!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago was the 250th birthday of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns.
