{"id":847,"date":"2009-05-10T14:27:09","date_gmt":"2009-05-10T14:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moscowcoffeereview.com\/carpecakem\/?p=847"},"modified":"2009-05-10T14:27:09","modified_gmt":"2009-05-10T14:27:09","slug":"a-mothers-day-poem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/moscowcoffeereview.com\/carpecakem\/2009\/05\/10\/a-mothers-day-poem\/","title":{"rendered":"A Mother&#8217;s Day Poem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lanyard<br \/>\nby Billy Collins<br id=\"uig61\" \/><br id=\"uig62\" \/>The other day as I was ricocheting slowly<br id=\"uig63\" \/>off the pale blue walls of this room,<br id=\"uig64\" \/>boucing from typewriter to piano,<br id=\"uig65\" \/>from bookshelf to an envelope lying on the floor,<br id=\"uig66\" \/>I found myself in the L section of the dictionary<br id=\"uig67\" \/>where my eyes fell upon the word lanyard.<br id=\"uig68\" \/><br id=\"uig69\" \/>No cookie nibbled by a French novelist<br id=\"uig610\" \/>could send one more suddenly into the past-<br id=\"uig611\" \/>a past where I sat at a workbench at a camp<br id=\"uig612\" \/>by a deep Adirondack lake<br id=\"uig613\" \/>learning how to braid thin plastic strips<br id=\"uig614\" \/>into a lanyard, a gift for my mother.<br id=\"uig615\" \/><br id=\"uig616\" \/>I had never seen anyone use a lanyard<br id=\"bqm1\" \/>or wear one, if that&#8217;s what you did with them,<br id=\"bqm10\" \/>but that did not keep me from crossing<br id=\"bqm11\" \/>strand over strand again and again<br id=\"bqm12\" \/>until I had made a boxy<br id=\"bqm13\" \/>red and white lanyard for my mother.<br id=\"bqm14\" \/><br id=\"bqm15\" \/>She gave me life and milk from her breasts,<br id=\"bqm16\" \/>and I gave her a lanyard.<br id=\"bqm17\" \/>She nursed me in many a sickroom,<br id=\"bqm18\" \/>lifted teaspoons of medicine to my lips,<br id=\"bqm19\" \/>set cold face-cloths on my forehead,<br id=\"bqm110\" \/>and then led me out into the airy light<br id=\"bqm111\" \/><br id=\"bqm112\" \/>and taught me to walk and swim,<br id=\"qkcg\" \/>and I, in turn, presented her with a lanyard.<br id=\"qkcg0\" \/>Here are thousands of meals, she said,<br id=\"qkcg1\" \/>and here is clothing and a good education.<br id=\"qkcg2\" \/>And her is your lanyard, I replied,<br id=\"qkcg3\" \/>which I made with a little help from a counselor.<br id=\"qkcg4\" \/><br id=\"qkcg5\" \/>Here is a breathing body and a beating heart,<br id=\"qkcg6\" \/>strong legs, bones and teeth,<br id=\"qkcg7\" \/>and two clear eyes to read the world, she whispered,<br id=\"qkcg8\" \/>and here, I said, is the lanyard I made at camp.<br id=\"qkcg9\" \/>And here, I wish to say to her now,<br id=\"qkcg10\" \/>is a smaller gift-not the archaic truth<br id=\"qkcg11\" \/><br id=\"qkcg12\" \/>that you can never repay your mother,<br id=\"qkcg13\" \/>but the rueful admission that when she took<br id=\"qkcg14\" \/>the two-tone lanyard from my hands,<br id=\"qkcg15\" \/>I was as sure as a boy could be<br id=\"qkcg16\" \/>that this useless, worthless thing I wove<br id=\"qkcg17\" \/>out of boredom would be enough to make us even.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lanyard by Billy CollinsThe other day as I was ricocheting slowlyoff the pale blue walls of this room,boucing from typewriter to piano,from bookshelf to an envelope lying on the floor,I found myself in the L section of the dictionarywhere my eyes fell upon the word lanyard.No cookie nibbled by a French novelistcould send one &hellip;
